In a secret fortress high in the Andes, Doc and his crew are enslaved by a race of extrasen\u00adso\u00adry super-blondes who wor\u00adship a green stone with a life of its own!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In this Doc Sav\u00adage nov\u00adel, Doc and his aides Ham and Monk face a race of beings with the pow\u00ader to influ\u00adence any\u00adone they meet, and who are in New York with a mis\u00adsion that brings them into con\u00adflict the the Man of Bronze!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> Monk is being tailed, rather clum\u00adsi\u00adly, but three men and one woman, all tall with blonde hair. Their appear\u00adance and way they seemed uncer\u00adtain of mov\u00ading in the bustling city of New York made them stand out, espe\u00adcial\u00adly to Monk\u2019s well-honed per\u00adcep\u00adtion. But when he man\u00adaged to cor\u00adner one of them, he got a shock: he found him\u00adself agree\u00ading to every\u00adthing the man said!<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were fol\u00adlow\u00ading me.\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n

The man looked Monk straight in the eye.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was not fol\u00adlow\u00ading you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou \u2013\u201d Monk\u2019s mouth came open, and remained open. Not because he had been lied to. That was\u00adn\u2019t what sur\u00adprised him. It was some\u00adthing else.<\/p>\n

It was anoth\u00ader thing, and the more Monk thought about it, the more stunned be became. Monk real\u00adized that he believed the man was\u00adn\u2019t fol\u00adlow\u00ading him.<\/p>\n

Now here, Monk thought wild\u00adly, is an impos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty. This guy was trail\u00ading me. There was anoth\u00ader doing it before him, and a girl before that. They were teamed up, and they were trail\u00ading me. I\u2019ve got eyes, I saw. But now the fun\u00adny look\u00ading guy tells me a bald-faced lie and I believe it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The moment Monk is able, he gets as far away from them as pos\u00adsi\u00adble, head\u00ading to tell Doc all about the encounter. Soon he, Doc and Monk\u2019s least favorite of their fel\u00adlow assis\u00adtants, Ham, are caught up track\u00ading down these mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous super-blondes until he, too, is cap\u00adtured by them and their mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous pow\u00ader. Yes, even the great Doc Sav\u00adage with a mind and will as strong as his body, is unable to resist the effects of their powers.<\/p>\n

\u00c2 There was\u00adn\u2019t any doubt of it. He had been curi\u00adous about the phys\u00adi\u00adcal sen\u00adsa\u00adtions which would accom\u00adpa\u00adny the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of the influ\u00adence \u2014 influ\u00adence wold be the only lay word he was pre\u00adpared to apply to it, although it was cer\u00adtain\u00adly an inad\u00ade\u00adquate one \u2014 and he was dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00ading that there was very lit\u00adtle phys\u00adi\u00adcal com\u00admo\u00adtion. The same thing couldn\u2019 t be said for his mind. There was def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly an effect. Strange, unex\u00adpect\u00aded, it was hard to define; in some respects it resem\u00adbled the effect of cer\u00adtain anes\u00adthet\u00adics. It was, of course. intan\u00adgi\u00adble, in the sense that it could\u00adn\u2019t be seen. He felt, gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly sum\u00adming up, quite help\u00adless. He knew ful\u00adly, of course, that he did\u00adn\u2019t want to be influ\u00adenced. But he was powerless.<\/p>\n

\u2026<\/p>\n

Doc knew one thing now. The resem\u00adblance this stuff bore to hyp\u00adno\u00adtism was damned small. No one, as faras Doc knew, had been able to induce any state of hyp\u00adnot\u00adic trance as def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly com\u00adplete that the vic\u00adtim would per\u00adform any act com\u00adplete\u00adly against his nature. True, hyp\u00adnot\u00adic oper\u00ada\u00adtors some\u00adtimes grinned know\u00ading\u00adly and said that, if a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic sub\u00adject had ever been induced to com\u00admit a rob\u00adbery or mur\u00adder, who would hear about it? The sub\u00adject would\u00adn\u2019t know what he had done, prob\u00ada\u00adbly. And the oper\u00ada\u00adtor would\u00adn\u2019t risk get\u00adting jailed. But Doc him\u00adself, in his exper\u00adi\u00adments, had found quite well-defined lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions to hypnosis.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Grant\u00aded, it takes a supreme effort on the part of his cap\u00adtor to keep Doc under con\u00adtrol, but its enough to last until Doc and com\u00adpa\u00adny are back in the Andes. Which is where they are need\u00aded: the super-blondes civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion has exist\u00aded for hun\u00addreds of years with\u00adout dis\u00adcov\u00adery, yet now an out\u00adsider has learned not only of its exis\u00adtence and its trea\u00adsures, he has also obtained one of the green stones that negates the pow\u00aders of the super-blondes on whomev\u00ader car\u00adries them. Once these stones were held only by select mem\u00adbers of the civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion but now out\u00adsiders hold sev\u00ader\u00adal of them, who are com\u00admand\u00ading a force that seeks to gain the treasure(s) that are held with\u00adin the civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion\u2019s remote Andean home. Now that Doc Sav\u00adage is present, though, what\u00adev\u00ader plans made by the unknown assailants (who are nev\u00ader real\u00adly seen or iden\u00adti\u00adfied) will be defeated.<\/p>\n

And the Green Mas\u00adter? Despite the fla\u00advor text, its actu\u00adal\u00adly a green stone of mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous ori\u00adgin and pow\u00aders, but it does have the abil\u00adi\u00adty to block the pow\u00ader the super-blondes pos\u00adsess. That\u2019s one of the unex\u00adplored mys\u00adter\u00adies of the story.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> For all that the set up for the action is pret\u00adty good, the con\u00adclu\u00adsion leaves a lot to be desired. The ulti\u00admate res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion of bring\u00ading in a group of out\u00adsiders, even if they are pro\u00adtect\u00aded by the green stones, to han\u00addle the sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion is still ask\u00ading for trou\u00adble, and its cer\u00adtain\u00adly not the way Doc would have han\u00addled the sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion in ear\u00adli\u00ader years. Of course, this is one of the last Doc Sav\u00adage nov\u00adels writ\u00adten (pub\u00adlished Win\u00adter, 1949) so it does indi\u00adcate that the series was show\u00ading signs of aging, or maybe the author was final\u00adly get\u00adting tired of writing.<\/p>\n

Plus there was only the per\u00adfunc\u00adto\u00adry attempt at arm-wav\u00ading to explain the ori\u00adgin of the pow\u00aders the super-blondes pos\u00adsessed, and no attempt to explain how it was passed down from the orig\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtor, how the \u201cgreen stone\u201d with the mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous prop\u00ader\u00adties was dis\u00adcov\u00adered, even how their civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion began or man\u00adaged to exist, undis\u00adcov\u00adered for so long. Even the out\u00adsider who threat\u00adened the Andean hid\u00adden civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion was\u00adn\u2019t iden\u00adti\u00adfied or even seen, let alone much of the rest of invad\u00ading forces. So many loose ends and neglect\u00aded avenues here \u2026<\/p>\n

His\u00adto\u00adry: \u201cThe Green Mas\u00adter\u201d<\/em> was one of the last Doc Sav\u00adage nov\u00adels writ\u00adten for the orig\u00adi\u00adnal series and is rather short, cer\u00adtain\u00adly short\u00ader than the full-length nov\u00adel as its pre\u00adde\u00adces\u00adsors. It has been reprint\u00aded in #47 of the reprint series and in the Doc Sav\u00adage Omnibus series #13.<\/p>\n

Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> Not par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded except for a demon\u00adstra\u00adtion of missed oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties and loose ends. Ken\u00adneth Robe\u00adson has done the hyp\u00adnot\u00adic mind con\u00adtrol plot line bet\u00adter in the past, such as \u201cThe Majii\u201d<\/em> or \u201cThe Men\u00adtal Wiz\u00adard\u201d<\/em> although this time the peo\u00adple using it are a lit\u00adtle bet\u00adter at using it, but the sto\u00adries men\u00adtioned here are much longer and bet\u00adter at explain\u00ading how it was done or accomplished.<\/p>\n
