Her goal in the first act is to win the Good Con\u00adduct Award by inform\u00ading on the plans of her friend Bab to elope. Then, at the begin\u00adning of the sec\u00adond act, she explains her\u00adself: as a small child, she dis\u00adcov\u00adered that she could make peo\u00adple do what\u00adev\u00ader she willed by hyp\u00adno\u00adtiz\u00ading them.<\/p>\n SONG. \u00ad JANE ANNIE. ALL. JANE A. ALL. This very stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal use of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis is accom\u00adplished through her almost instan\u00adta\u00adneous \u00e2\u20ac\u203ainductions\u2019 and are accom\u00adplished by hyp\u00adnot\u00adic ges\u00adtures and pass\u00ades (such stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal actions are very much in line with Vic\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan times.)<\/p>\n <\/p> She uses her abil\u00adi\u00adties to com\u00admand the affec\u00adtions of the man she fan\u00adcies, as well as being match\u00admak\u00ader when her best friend Bab is con\u00adflict\u00aded between two pos\u00adsi\u00adble suit\u00adors, Jack the mil\u00adi\u00adtary offi\u00adcer or Tom the press stu\u00addent: Jane Annie takes the prac\u00adti\u00adcal course and hyp\u00adnot\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly takes Jack for her\u00adself and hyp\u00adno\u00adtizes Bab and Tom into accept\u00ading each oth\u00ader. Any pos\u00adsi\u00adble obstruc\u00adtion by the mem\u00adbers of the fac\u00adul\u00adty at the school are quick\u00adly dis\u00admissed with a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic wave of her hand, and the two cou\u00adples exit to a rous\u00ading cho\u00adrus exclaim\u00ading her hyp\u00adnot\u00adic prowess.<\/p>\n His\u00adto\u00adry:<\/em> J M Bar\u00adrie was con\u00adtract\u00aded to write the libret\u00adto (the speak\u00ading parts) for an opera. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, how\u00adev\u00ader, in 1893, Bar\u00adrie suf\u00adfered the first of his series of ner\u00advous break\u00addowns and was unable to com\u00adplete the project. Bar\u00adrie asked Doyle to help, which was a good idea inso\u00adfar as Doyle was the hottest lit\u00ader\u00adary prop\u00ader\u00adty of the time since cre\u00adat\u00ading Sher\u00adlock Holmes only six years pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly. By the time Doyle began work on the libret\u00adto, the shape of the play had already been deter\u00admined and he was unable to cor\u00adrect what he saw as seri\u00adous prob\u00adlems. He com\u00adplet\u00aded the work appar\u00adent\u00adly using Bar\u00adrie\u2019s sce\u00adnar\u00adios. Just what was writ\u00adten by whom is unknown, but I have some guesses.<\/p>\n The pro\u00adduc\u00adtion ran from from May 13 to July 1, 1893 for 50 per\u00adfor\u00admances, pro\u00adduc\u00ading 4 revi\u00adsions of the libret\u00adto, an unlike\u00adly num\u00adber giv\u00aden the rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly short run. George Bernard Shaw reviewed it and said it was, \u201cthe most unblush\u00ading out\u00adburst of tom\u00adfool\u00adery that two respon\u00adsi\u00adble cit\u00adi\u00adzens could con\u00adceiv\u00adably indulge in pub\u00adlicly.\u201d Oth\u00ader review\u00aders were equal\u00adly as unkind. \u201cJane Annie\u201d<\/em> has been rarely per\u00adformed since and is large\u00adly for\u00adgot\u00adten to this day, remem\u00adbered only for its Bar\u00adrie and Doyle con\u00adnec\u00adtions, as well as its col\u00adlat\u00ader\u00adal con\u00adnec\u00adtion with Gilbert & Sullivan.<\/p>\n Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Its hard to believe that the lead char\u00adac\u00adter was sup\u00adposed to have this hyp\u00adnot\u00adic pow\u00ader: it doesn\u2019t appear at all in the first act yet is the main focus of the char\u00adac\u00adter in the sec\u00adond act. The rea\u00adson, I think, is because of Doyle\u2019s involve\u00adment. Bar\u00adrie, as far as I can tell, had no inter\u00adest in hyp\u00adno\u00adtism, nor are there any appear\u00adances of such in his writ\u00adings, where\u00adas Doyle was active\u00adly involved in Spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adism and medi\u00adums and so it is not a far stretch to believe hyp\u00adno\u00adtism was also one of his inter\u00adests, as hyp\u00adno\u00adsis is men\u00adtioned in the Sher\u00adlock Holmes sto\u00adry \u00e2\u20ac\u203aThe Case of the Illus\u00adtri\u00adous Client\u2019<\/em> in con\u00adjunc\u00adtion with the way a sin\u00adis\u00adter indi\u00advid\u00adual has tak\u00aden con\u00adtrol of a young heiress but it is nev\u00ader shown or demon\u00adstrat\u00aded, and is more explic\u00adit\u00adly used in two oth\u00ader non-Holmes short sto\u00adries. How\u00adev\u00ader, one of Bar\u00adrie\u2019s biog\u00adra\u00adphers sur\u00admis\u00ades that while the hyp\u00adno\u00adsis scenes sprung from Doyle\u2019s mind, hyp\u00adno\u00adtism is such a major mov\u00ading force of the sec\u00adond act that Bar\u00adrie must have con\u00adceived it and made it part of the sce\u00adnario avail\u00adable to Doyle that he appar\u00adent\u00adly could\u00adn\u2019t cor\u00adrect. (I think Doyle was stuck with a sce\u00adnario where he had to explain the way the lead char\u00adac\u00adter was able to get away with what she did and decid\u00aded to use hyp\u00adno\u00adsis as the rationale.)<\/p>\n It is, how\u00adev\u00ader, safe to assume that both writ\u00aders were at least con\u00adscious about hyp\u00adno\u00adsis as more than just a lit\u00ader\u00adary device. Hyp\u00adno\u00adsis was a very pop\u00adu\u00adlar top\u00adic of research and demon\u00adstra\u00adtion among the upper-class of Vic\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan Eng\u00adland of the peri\u00adod, of which both authors were mem\u00adbers. Among its prac\u00adti\u00adtion\u00aders were such fel\u00adlow authors as Charles Dick\u00adens and Wilkie Collins (author of \u201cThe Moon\u00adstone\u201d<\/em>: one of the ear\u00adli\u00adest mys\u00adtery writ\u00aders, cre\u00adator of the final expo\u00adsi\u00adtion scene by the inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading detec\u00adtive and a writer who made use of hyp\u00adnot\u00adic ele\u00adments in his sto\u00adries.) Demon\u00adstra\u00adtions of a wide range of hyp\u00adnot\u00adic phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adna, includ\u00ading medi\u00adumship, were com\u00admon. (These demon\u00adstra\u00adtions, I believe, also strong\u00adly influ\u00adenced the ori\u00adgin of the prac\u00adtice of stage hypnosis.)<\/p>\n How\u00adev\u00ader, such demon\u00adstra\u00adtions were typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly and prob\u00ada\u00adbly exclu\u00adsive\u00adly in terms of the Vic\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan cul\u00adture, with a dom\u00adi\u00adnant upper-class man hyp\u00adno\u00adtiz\u00ading a low\u00ader-class woman, usu\u00adal\u00adly a ser\u00advant, using her as the object (or per\u00adhaps the term \u201csub\u00adject\u201d would be more appro\u00adpri\u00adate) for the demon\u00adstra\u00adtion. Some of these women became well-known and achieved a cer\u00adtain lev\u00adel of fame in their own right, but the class bound\u00adaries were always present. That\u2019s what makes \u201cJane Anne\u201d so strik\u00ading: the lead char\u00adac\u00adter is so com\u00adplete\u00adly at odds not only with the pat\u00adtern described above, she is so com\u00adplete\u00adly at odds with the accept\u00aded role for women in Vic\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan soci\u00adety, being a self-cen\u00adtered dom\u00adi\u00adnant woman hyp\u00adno\u00adtist of rather uncer\u00adtain social stand\u00ading and a social climber of the most aggres\u00adsive sort. This could only hap\u00adpen because this was intend\u00aded as a com\u00adic opera. (It would be an inter\u00adest\u00ading inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion to see whether this was a com\u00admon theme in Vic\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan productions.)<\/p>\n One thing that I would like to inves\u00adti\u00adgate is whether some\u00adone ever wrote a Sher\u00adlock Holmes pas\u00adtiche involv\u00ading Jane Annie.
