How\u00adev\u00ader, I was sur\u00adprised to dis\u00adcov\u00ader, at the very end of the sto\u00adry col\u00adlec\u00adtion shelves, a hard\u00adcov\u00ader copy of <em>\u201cFavorite Sto\u00adries of Hyp\u00adno\u00adtism\u201d<\/em> (1965) edit\u00aded by Don Ward. The black cov\u00ader with its shad\u00adowy female face, con\u00adcen\u00adtric cir\u00adcles radi\u00adat\u00ading out from her left eye, is just so stereo\u00adtyp\u00adi\u00adcal but to my mind back then, so demon\u00adstra\u00adtive of hyp\u00adno\u00adsis that, of course, I had to check it out. It also includ\u00aded a fore\u00adword by Dr. Mil\u00adton Kline, a promi\u00adnent psy\u00adchol\u00ado\u00adgist who cham\u00adpi\u00adoned hyp\u00adno\u00adsis as a ther\u00ada\u00adpeu\u00adtic med\u00adical prac\u00adtice and the author of the book <em>\u201cFreud on Hyp\u00adno\u00adsis\u201d<\/em> .<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar\u2019<\/em> by Poe, Edgar&nbsp;Allan<\/h3>\n<p>Prob\u00ada\u00adbly the most famous of the sto\u00adries in this col\u00adlec\u00adtion, pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly for the author but also for the grue\u00adsome nature and espe\u00adcial\u00adly the close of the sto\u00adry. The self-uniden\u00adti\u00adfied author mes\u00admer\u00adizes M. Valde\u00admar at the point of death to pre\u00advent him from actu\u00adal\u00adly dying. Over the fol\u00adlow\u00ading months, the process of death slows dra\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly but nev\u00ader quite stops, as M. Valde\u00admar\u2019s body become increas\u00ading\u00adly decrepit, until final\u00adly M. Valde\u00admar begs his mes\u00admerist to allow him to die. Upon doing so, the body of M Valde\u00admar col\u00adlaps\u00ades into decay and putrification.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018The Haunted and the Haunters\u2019<\/em> by Bulwer-Lytton, Edward<\/h3>\n<p>Or, <em>\u2018The House and the Brain\u2019<\/em> which is the longer ver\u00adsion of the same sto\u00adry, adding the final con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion that is sort of an after\u00adthought. The main sto\u00adry itself is more of a haunt\u00aded house mys\u00adtery with occult over\u00adtones as opposed to actu\u00adal hyp\u00adno\u00adtism, although mes\u00admerism is ref\u00ader\u00adenced by way of explain\u00ading some of the mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous occur\u00adrences tak\u00ading place inside the house: mes\u00admerism itself as hyp\u00adnot\u00adic dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion is demon\u00adstrat\u00aded dur\u00ading the final conversation.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018An Adventure in Brownville\u2019<\/em> by Bierce, Ambrose<\/h3>\n<p>A young woman believes her sis\u00adter was mur\u00addered by their guardian through (but uin\u00adstat\u00aded) a mes\u00admer\u00adic influnce, and she soon fol\u00adlows her sis\u00adter in death, despite the efforts of the nar\u00adra\u00adtor to pre\u00advent it. The sto\u00adry includes a foot\u00adnote \u201cThis sto\u00adry was writ\u00adten in col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with Miss Ina Lil\u00adlian Peter\u00adson, to whom is right\u00adly due the cred\u00adit for what\u00adev\u00ader mer\u00adit it may have.\u201d Miss Peter\u00adson was def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly a real per\u00adson, not some\u00adone cre\u00adat\u00aded to be the source of the sto\u00adry as has been done by some authors, as copies of Bierce\u2019s sto\u00adry have been found inscribed to&nbsp;her.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018The Hypnotist\u2019<\/em> by Bierce, Ambrose<\/h3>\n<p>A sar\u00addon\u00adical\u00adly humor\u00adous tale about a man who dis\u00adcov\u00aders from an ear\u00adly age the pow\u00ader to hyp\u00adno\u00adtize oth\u00aders, a gift pow\u00ader\u00adful enough to cause any\u00adone so entranced to do what\u00adev\u00ader he commanded.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018The Magic Egg\u2019<\/em> by Stockton, Frank<\/h3>\n<p>A young man returns from an extend\u00aded trip to the Ori\u00adent and promis\u00ades to show an audi\u00adence of his friends (and, most impor\u00adtant\u00adly, his fiance\u00e9) the mar\u00advels he wants to share. First is a mag\u00adic lantern show of vary\u00ading col\u00adors, fol\u00adlowed by a mag\u00adic show, where\u00adin he presents the Mag\u00adic Egg, a mar\u00advel of mag\u00adic. But it is all an illu\u00adsion, a hyp\u00adnot\u00adic illu\u00adsion caused by the col\u00adored flash\u00ading lights of the lantern show, one his fiance\u00e9 saw through because she did not watch the lantern show.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018The Cure for Love\u2019<\/em> by Wells, H.&nbsp;G.<\/h3>\n<p>This sto\u00adry is a chap\u00adter from Wells\u2019 novel\u00adla <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Story_of_the_Days_to_Come\"><em>\u2018A Sto\u00adry of the Days to Come\u2019<\/em><\/a>. In the far-flung future days, a very prop\u00ader Eng\u00adlish\u00adman is per\u00adturbed that his daugh\u00adter was show\u00ading an inter\u00adest in a quite unsuit\u00adable young man. The father employs a hyp\u00adno\u00adtist, a respectable prac\u00adtice of its time, to influ\u00adence her into for\u00adget\u00adting him and tak\u00ading an inter\u00adest in the very prop\u00ader gen\u00adtle\u00adman who was select\u00aded for&nbsp;her.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018The Great Keinplatz Experiment\u2019<\/em> by Doyle, Arthur Conan<\/h3>\n<p>Anoth\u00ader humor\u00adous tale, this one about the great Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor von Baum\u00adgarten and his stu\u00addent Fritz von Hart\u00admann and an exper\u00adi\u00adment in hyp\u00adno\u00adsis where the two switch bod\u00adies, and the comedic com\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adtions aris\u00ading therefrom.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018A Judgment Come to Daniel\u2019<\/em> by Cobb, Irvin&nbsp;S.<\/h3>\n<p>The great Danel the Mys\u00adtic, mes\u00admerist and stage per\u00adformer, encoun\u00adters some\u00adone who proves remark\u00adably resis\u00adtant to his hyp\u00adnot\u00adic prowess on&nbsp;stage.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018Diamond Cut Diamond\u2019<\/em> by Austin, F Britten<\/h3>\n<p>A tale of espi\u00adonage, mur\u00adder and hyp\u00adno\u00adsis, where mem\u00adbers of a gov\u00adern\u00adment counter-espi\u00adonage group are tar\u00adget\u00aded by oppo\u00adsi\u00adtion oper\u00ada\u00adtives. The tac\u00adtic used involves a drugged hyp\u00adnot\u00adic state where\u00adin the vic\u00adtim false\u00adly con\u00adfess\u00ades to mur\u00adder, and the hyp\u00adno\u00adtist is an exot\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly beau\u00adti\u00adful woman with hyp\u00adnot\u00adic grey eyes. How\u00adev\u00ader, the wily chief of the group is able to turn the tables on the oppo\u00adsi\u00adtion, using the same tactics.<\/p>\n<p>Added: I have to won\u00adder whether this sto\u00adry inspired the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Woman_in_Green\">\u201cThe Woman in Green\u201d<\/a>. The par\u00adal\u00adlels are striking.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018He Cometh and He Passeth By\u2019<\/em> by Wakefield, H.&nbsp;K.<\/h3>\n<p>A tale of super\u00adnat\u00adur\u00adal mur\u00adder and revenge through the same means. Oscar Clin\u00adton is a pro\u00adfound psy\u00adchic who uses his tal\u00adents to steal and defraud, and his vic\u00adtims some\u00adtimes meet with a ter\u00adri\u00adble death. The last such vic\u00adtim, how\u00adev\u00ader, has a good friend who is capa\u00adble of turn\u00ading Clin\u00adton\u2019s pow\u00aders against him, to his doom. <em>\u2018He Cometh and He Pas\u00adseth By\u2019<\/em> was one of the sto\u00adries select\u00aded for August Der\u00adleth\u2019s ground-break\u00ading anthol\u00ado\u00adgy <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sleep_No_More_%28anthology%29\"><em>\u201cSleep No More\u201d<\/em><\/a> (1944) which would also include sto\u00adries by H P Love\u00adcraft, Clark Ash\u00adton Smith, Robert Bloch and Robert E Howard: pret\u00adty hefty company.<\/p>\n<h3><em>\u2018The Long Road\u2019<\/em> by Harvey, William Fryer<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<p><em>Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly most of these sto\u00adries were dat\u00aded even back when this vol\u00adume was pub\u00adlished in 1965 but they still give a good rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of the fic\u00adtion involv\u00ading hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and mes\u00admerism at the&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n<p>Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, out of all the sto\u00adries, I have not been able to locate a copy of <em>\u2018Dia\u00admond Cut Dia\u00admond\u2019<\/em> online any\u00adwhere: the sto\u00adry has been well-enough received to be con\u00adsid\u00adered one of the best mys\u00adtery short sto\u00adries of the ear\u00adly 20<sup>th<\/sup> Cen\u00adtu\u00adry. The same is true for the oth\u00ader two unref\u00ader\u00adenced sto\u00adries in the list, as they may all be still in copy\u00adright, as they cer\u00adtain\u00adly were at the time of pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion, unlike the rest of the collection.<\/p>\n<p>Nor can I find out much about its author F Brit\u00adten Austin, the only one of the list that does\u00adn\u2019t even have a rudi\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry Wikipedia page: I can find more about the author by way of the movies adapt\u00aded from his nov\u00adels than his life or bibliography.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> This book is def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded for any\u00adone inter\u00adest\u00aded in hyp\u00adno\u00adsis and espe\u00adcial\u00adly how it has been rep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00aded in fic\u00adtion over the ages.
