The detec\u00adtive from Earth feared The Black more than any tor\u00adture his own plan\u00adet could con\u00adceive. But he had to uncov\u00ader the sin\u00adis\u00adter plot that threat\u00adened Earth and all its people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> On Rig\u00adan, an alien plan\u00adet where the soci\u00adety is rigid\u00adly struc\u00adtured accord\u00ading to the rel\u00ada\u00adtive tele\u00adpath\u00adic pow\u00ader to con\u00adtrol oth\u00aders, some\u00adone is tak\u00ading advan\u00adtage of that pow\u00ader to kid\u00adnap defense\u00adless humans and pos\u00adsi\u00adbly the natives as well. Mor\u00adgan Sell\u00aders, an inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtor from Earth, is matched with Jael Forty, a native inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtor with lit\u00adtle expe\u00adri\u00adence in this sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion as crime on that world of this type is very scarce. Com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion between the class\u00ades is severe\u00adly lim\u00adit\u00aded, adding to the dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty. To obvi\u00adate that, the human inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtor is dis\u00adguised as a Trav\u00adel\u00ader, a native alien with\u00adout the tele\u00adpath\u00adic pow\u00ader, one that can pass among all of the class\u00ades with\u00adout draw\u00ading a chal\u00adlenge, pro\u00adtect\u00aded from tele\u00adpath\u00adic con\u00adtrol by the same rigid class structure.<\/p>\n

Jael is a 40<\/em>, mean\u00ading he is of the class that con\u00adtrols 40 tele\u00adpath\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly infe\u00adri\u00ador natives, although it is not shown exact\u00adly how he does that in prac\u00adtice: how\u00adev\u00ader, dur\u00ading the sto\u00adry, he is shown advanc\u00ading to become a 50<\/em>, which is also a plot point that will affect the actu\u00adal res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion of the mystery.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> \u201cThe Mind Traders\u201d<\/em> is a much more mem\u00ado\u00adrable sto\u00adry than \u201cThe Fly\u00ading Eyes\u201d<\/em> by the same author. The depic\u00adtions of the rigid class struc\u00adture sticks in the mind long after the sto\u00adry is over: the way the dif\u00adfer\u00adent class\u00ades seg\u00adre\u00adgate at par\u00adties, the way dress col\u00ador (Trav\u00adel\u00aders wear red, 40s were green) indi\u00adcates class, the def\u00ader\u00aden\u00adtial way sub\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnate class\u00ades must address high\u00ader class\u00ades, the men\u00adtal bat\u00adtles that deter\u00admine ris\u00ading in class\u00ades. It also shows the dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties involved in hav\u00ading and main\u00adtain\u00ading that social struc\u00adture, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when that soci\u00adety comes into con\u00adflict with anoth\u00ader soci\u00adety, and the res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion of the plot sug\u00adgests dras\u00adtic changes to the soci\u00adety as a result.<\/p>\n

Rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion:<\/em> Rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded more for the soci\u00adetal depic\u00adtion than any\u00adthing else. It shows just how a soci\u00adety com\u00adprised of mind con\u00adtrol\u00adling telepaths can exist, what lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions came about to pre\u00adserve the soci\u00adety and the indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals and how it has adapt\u00aded to main\u00adtain itself. As a mys\u00adtery it is most\u00adly flat, the major mys\u00adtery being how the soci\u00adety works, not so much the actu\u00adal crimes involved. It should also be not\u00aded that while the Rig\u00adans are capa\u00adble of tele\u00adpath\u00adic mind con\u00adtrol, they are not com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcat\u00ading telepaths but they are empaths.<\/p>\n

Also of inter\u00adest is the method of pun\u00adish\u00adment called \u201cThe Black\u201d. From the descrip\u00adtions, it appears to be a total iso\u00adla\u00adtion of all out\u00adside stim\u00aduli, a com\u00adplete men\u00adtal cut-off from the out\u00adside world, which allows all of the inter\u00adnal night\u00admares full reign with\u00adin the con\u00adscious\u00adness, pos\u00adsi\u00adbly fos\u00adtered by the one enforc\u00ading The Black. It is the main pun\u00adish\u00adment for trans\u00adgres\u00adsions on Rig\u00adan oth\u00ader than being Controlled.<\/p>\n

Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly the title leaves some\u00adthing to be decid\u00aded, as it just isn\u2019t as descrip\u00adtive as \u201cThe Fly\u00ading Eyes\u201d<\/em>: some\u00adthing like \u201cThe Mind Mas\u00adters<\/em>\u201d or \u201cThe Mind Rob\u00adbers\u201d<\/em> would have much more descriptive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
