Yet is also one of the most mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous organs known, its many and var\u00adied func\u00adtions only sketchi\u00adly under\u00adstood, in part because of its com\u00adplex\u00adi\u00adty and com\u00adplex inter\u00adnal struc\u00adture, hid\u00adden from view and direct manip\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion deep with\u00adin the skull, acces\u00adsi\u00adble for the most part only indi\u00adrect\u00adly and there\u00adfore very dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to inves\u00adti\u00adgate directly.<\/p>\n
\u201cIncog\u00adni\u00adto: the Secret Lives of the Brain\u201d<\/em> is a book by a neu\u00adro\u00adsci\u00aden\u00adtist, David Eagle\u00adman. which attempts to shed some light on the sub\u00adject. It is a book pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly des\u00adtined for the lay per\u00adson and is designed to show just how the brain is so com\u00adplex and mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous, yet under\u00adstand\u00adable if only by a process of obser\u00adva\u00adtion and deduction.<\/p>\n Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> This book mir\u00adrors much of what I\u2019ve been think\u00ading regard\u00ading the inter\u00adnal process\u00ades of the brain, although I was com\u00ading to the sub\u00adject through the \u201cbrain as a com\u00adput\u00ader\u201d par\u00ada\u00addigm. The brain may be just one organ but it com\u00adpris\u00ades many, many sep\u00ada\u00adrate sec\u00adtions and func\u00adtions, some of which are com\u00adpli\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry and some of which are even com\u00adbat\u00adive. It is a won\u00adder that it even func\u00adtions at all, and, of course, any\u00adone can come up with exam\u00adples from per\u00adson\u00adal obser\u00adva\u00adtion or expe\u00adri\u00adence when it does\u00adn\u2019t in one way or anoth\u00ader, small or large.<\/p>\n My one biggest annoy\u00adance was that it was just a lit\u00adtle too super\u00adfi\u00adcial for my tastes. It talked a lot about the what<\/em> of the brain and its func\u00adtions but not so much on the how<\/em> and why<\/em> of it. Grant\u00aded, this book was intend\u00aded for the gen\u00ader\u00adal audi\u00adence but I would have liked to see a lit\u00adtle more meat to the descrip\u00adtions and more space devot\u00aded to con\u00adtem\u00adpla\u00adtion of the caus\u00ades of how the brain does what it does. There are some flash\u00ades of that, as for exam\u00adple the descrip\u00adtion of how base\u00adball play\u00aders track fly balls in the out\u00adfield, where they do not auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly cal\u00adcu\u00adlate the tra\u00adjec\u00adto\u00adry to fig\u00adure out where to run to to catch the ball: instead, they watch the track of the ball and if it appears to devi\u00adate from a straight line, mean\u00ading they or the ball are mov\u00ading away from the path, they change direc\u00adtion to return it to a straight line. But most\u00adly the brain is treat\u00aded as a black box of many inter\u00adnal devices, left unexplored.<\/p>\n My oth\u00ader annoy\u00adance was that it does\u00adn\u2019t men\u00adtion hyp\u00adno\u00adsis at all in the text, and only once in a foot\u00adnote, remark\u00ading how it can affect the results of a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar type of test results.<\/p>\n
