The sum\u00admer\u2019s biggest movie so far, and like\u00adly the biggest of the whole sum\u00admer, is Mar\u00advel\u2019s \u201cThe Avengers\u201d<\/em>. Direct\u00aded and script\u00aded by Joss Wheton, it has all the action any\u00adone would want in a movie as well as the humor, the char\u00adac\u00adters, even the pathos.<\/p>\n

And, it even has mind con\u00adtrol. NOTE: Spoil\u00aders Ahead! You Have Been Warned!<\/em><\/p>\n

Descrip\u00adtion:<\/em> When Loki returns to Earth via the pow\u00ader of the Tesser\u00adact, he is bear\u00ading the \u201cScepter of Plot Con\u00adtrivance\u201d which gives him the pow\u00ader of mind con\u00adtrol, by remov\u00ading the free will of its vic\u00adtims. Hawk\u00adeye and two sci\u00aden\u00adtists fall under his sway and work for him through\u00adout most of the film. Hawk\u00adeye takes a good shot to the head that brings him out of Lok\u00adi\u2019s con\u00adtrol. For\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly the good guys are able to hold off the alien inva\u00adsion ini\u00adti\u00adat\u00aded by Loki long enough for a final solu\u00adtion to the prob\u00adlem to be sent.<\/p>\n

Com\u00admen\u00adtary:<\/em> This is prob\u00ada\u00adbly the best comics movie I\u2019ve seen in a long time. (So say a lot of oth\u00ader peo\u00adple.) It beats out all of the pre\u00advi\u00adous Mar\u00advel movies and builds on (and improves upon) the movies of the past few years that all pre\u00adsaged this movie. I would have to go back to the orig\u00adi\u00adnal \u201cSuper\u00adman\u201d<\/em> for a com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson, and even that pales in comparison.<\/p>\n

And how does this accom\u00adplish this? How did \u201cThe Avengers\u201d<\/em> escape the medi\u00adoc\u00adrity trap that affect\u00aded such recent films as \u201cGreen Lantern\u201d<\/em>? For one thing, the qual\u00adi\u00adty of the com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion was equal to the heroes. By the end of the film, Loki man\u00adaged to make him\u00adself an equal foe to all of the Avengers singly, and the alien foes were a match for the team\u2019s assem\u00adbled might. But before then, they were all against each oth\u00ader (some of which was Lok\u00adi\u2019s doing, I\u2019m sure) and there\u00adfore they all were antag\u00ado\u00adnists before they were allies. For anoth\u00ader, it was fun\u00adny<\/em>: the num\u00adber of great lines (or non-lines, as when Steve Rogers just hands Fury a $10) in the movie was greater than sev\u00ader\u00adal of the past super\u00adhero movies put together.\u00c2  And the lines come nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly to the char\u00adac\u00adters: it shows a great under\u00adstand\u00ading of the nature of the char\u00adac\u00adters that comes from a gift\u00aded and expe\u00adri\u00adenced writer like Joss Whedon.<\/p>\n

But what brings this to the top are the actors. Every\u00adbody is spot on, from the major stars all the way down to the lit\u00adtle peo\u00adple. Tom Hid\u00addle\u00adston<\/a> as Loki is one of the best cast\u00ading deci\u00adsions of the year (or before, as he played the same char\u00adac\u00adter with\u00adout the same charm in \u201cThor\u201d<\/em>, but he real\u00adly shines here.) And despite their vary\u00ading lev\u00adels of pow\u00ader and abil\u00adi\u00adty, each of the Avengers have their own face time and demon\u00adstrate exact\u00adly why they are a pos\u00adi\u00adtive mem\u00adber of the team: Black Wid\u00adow\u2019s scene inter\u00adro\u00adgat\u00ading Loki is a mas\u00adter\u00adpiece, and Lok\u00adi\u2019s teeth-gnash\u00ading at the end when he real\u00adized he\u2019s been played is great; Hawk\u00adeye launch\u00ading arrows look\u00ading in the oppo\u00adsite direc\u00adtion, then sur\u00adpris\u00ading Loki with an explod\u00ading arrow; the recog\u00adni\u00adtion that Bruce Ban\u00adner was just as impor\u00adtant to the team, and his \u2018part\u00adner\u00adship\u2019 with the Hulk was nev\u00ader bet\u00adter real\u00adized; Cap\u00adtain Amer\u00adi\u00adca tak\u00ading com\u00admand the way a mil\u00adi\u00adtary leader should in a cri\u00adsis; Thor, the moment he reached for his ham\u00admer and hes\u00adi\u00adtat\u00aded, paus\u00ading a moment to won\u00adder whether he was still wor\u00adthy to wield it; and Robert Downey Jr.<\/a> who almost steals the show and has the most char\u00adac\u00adter development.<\/p>\n
