What’s a common misconception people have about hypnosis that bothers you the most?
That there is something supernatural about it.
The other great misconception about it, that someone can be made to act against their ethics or morals, is certainly even more prevalent, but I feel this misconception comes from the misconception of the supernatural element.
How do you feel about stage hypnosis?
I am not one of these people who consider stage hypnosis to be in some way a degradation of the use of hypnosis. I feel it is a valid form of entertainment when performed by people who know what they are doing and are cognizant of the potential safety factors involved in any live performance.
That said, I must add that I know more than a couple professional stage hypnotists, some of whom are personal friends. I would never want to negatively impact their professional standing and reputation, not their livelihoods.
Would you ever consent to trancing someone / being tranced in front of an audience?
I am by nature a rather quiet and reserved person, not very comfortable being in the spotlight, so I would not in most circumstances want to do anything before an audience by myself. That includes being the hypnotist as well as the subject. If there was some way of getting acclimated to that, through experience, I may reconsider.
That said, I could be persuaded to participate in a stage hypnosis show as a subject, especially for a female stage hypnotist.
What’s your favorite pop culture reference about hypnosis?
Whew! So many possibilities.
The first one that comes to mind is “The Hypnotic Eye”. A movie about a sinister stage hypnotist who entrances his lovely subjects certainly plays to many of the public misconceptions regarding hypnosis, plus the producers had a professional stage hypnotist instruct the actor how to perform on camera as well as hypnotizing the actresses to go in to a trance on cue. Regrettably, it suffers from low public knowledge so it barely registers as a pop culture icon.
Another one that comes to mind is the classic spiral motif that so represents hypnosis in popular culture. That and the spooky, swirly music that seems to always accompany it in any advertisement or television episode scene transition. The same also goes for dangling crystals and staring eyes.
But I guess my favorite has to be “Trilby”. No other work so influenced the pop culture regarding hypnosis throughout its history. It is one of the few culture icons that directly influenced the English language, with the addition of “Svengali” as a term for a manipulative mentor.
Favorite hypnotic experience as a hypnotist?
If my experience as a subject is limited, my experience as a hypnotist is almost non-existent. I have some training and a lot of observation and rumination, but outside of a few classroom situations, I have not hypnotized anyone. (The one instance at a convention party where a small group of us were so fractionated that all it took was a simple command or even just waving a finger before someone’s eyes to drop any and all of us doesn’t count. If I had to make a choice, that probably would be it.)
Favorite hypnotic experience as a subject?
This is a hard question to answer, mainly because of my very limited experience as a hypnotic subject.
It was over twenty years between the two times I mentioned in Day 1 and the next time I was hypnotized, which was at a convention I attended. It was then a few more years before I was contracted to record and produce instructional videos for Gisella Zukausky, a local hypnotherapist, who discovered I was a very good demonstration subject. Even to this day, I can probably count the number of times I was ever hypnotized using every finger and only most my toes.
So, with that limited selection to work from, the one that constantly comes to mind was when Gisella used me to demonstrate the Edsaile State. I remember the induction quite clearly, and also my surprise when she demonstrated body catalepsy by holding up my arm and it stayed in place. On an intellectual level, I understood that was the expected response but I wasn’t quite convinced that was going to happen until it actually did.
However, I am hoping to go beyond that in the future.
